Roald Amundsen was born to a family of Norwegian shipowners and captains because of that, growing up he was very wealthy being in the Shipbuilding business between the towns Fredrikstad and SarpsborgHe was the fourth son in the family. His father was Jens Amundsen his mother was Hanna SahlqvistHis mum Hanna Sahlqvist did not want Roald in the marine life so she sent him to university to become a doctor, a promise that Roald kept until his mother died at the time he was aged 21, then he quit university and chose for the life at sea. Roald had hidden a lifelong dream inspired by Fridtjof Nansen's in the crossing of Greenland in 1888 and the failed Franklin Expedition. because of these events, he decided on a life of mind blowing exploration. The biographies about Roald Amundsen are very diverging--some hold him a hero, others reflect a strongly critical attitude. Unfortunately the school he went to as a boy is unknown but we do know that in later life he went to the University of Christiana (now the University of Oslo) .
